OVERVIEW

The reinvention of a large walled garden

It was imperative that the new landscaping complimented the historic setting and the Grade II listed Georgian property.

We were commissioned by prestigious landscape architect Andrew Grant of Grant Associates to assist with the reinvention of this large formal Georgian walled garden in Bath.

The Grove is a Grade II listed property situated in a deep wooded valley in one of Bath’s most sought-after locations. The large southwest-facing gardens are stepped down the valley-side and look directly at the Paragon School.

Andrew designed a natural swimming pool at the lowest level of the garden. It was imperative that the new landscaping and pool complimented the historic setting and the listed Georgian property.

DESIGN

Andrew Grant designed the natural pool to be hidden in the shade of trees at the lowest level of the garden

The natural swimming pool at The Grove was designed to be hidden in the shade of trees at the bottom level of the garden. Andrew also added a wood fired hot tub on a terrace further up the garden which overlooks the pool.

Digging the hole for the pond was a challenge as we could only get a small digger into the garden. In addition, we had to do the dig in the depths of winter in wet and rather treacherous conditions.

In total, we removed over 300 tonnes of spoil from the site in a two-week period filling 17 lorries. All spoil from the dig and the site had to go out through a winding garden path that climbed the valley-side.

IMPLEMENTATION

A haven for local flora and fauna

Once the dig was complete, we built the terrace walls, steps, terraces and swimming pool. Reclaimed local stone was used to face all of the structures and bespoke Bath stone copings were fitted to the tops of all walls and around the swimming pool. The hot tub was installed and the tumbled limestone paving around the natural swimming pool and its bespoke oak pontoon were fitted.

The pool uses a solar powered bubble system to filter the water and keep it crystal clear for swimming all year round.

The natural pool is complimented by almost tropical planting installed by the client and the hot tub terrace has become a haven for local flora and fauna.
